All about Scolecite, the beautiful, fibrous, spiritual healing stone.
Scolecite is a beautiful stone of high vibrational energy. Potentially first discovered in 1813 by A.F. Gehlan and J.N. Fuchs, scolecite can now be found across the globe (including the U.S., Iceland, & India). It's name is derived from the Greek word "skolec," meaning "worm". This is a reference to the reaction of the mineral against a blowpipe, bending and waving from the heat.
Like other stones of high vibration, scolecite makes a great tool for higher chakra work, spiritual healing & communication, and other peaceful endeavors. It is a hydrous calcium aluminum silicate (containing calcium, aluminum, silicon, and water), and a member of the zeolite family, pairing well with natrolite and mesolite. The main identifying features of scolecite are listed in the table below.

The Formation & Composition of Scolecite
Scolecite is a form of zeolite, which means it contains mostly hydrated aluminum and silicon. This particular zeolite also contains calcium. It will often grow in long, slender crystals, forming a fibrous, silky appearance.
Scolecite generally forms within the cavities of basaltic lava, but can also occur in granites and gneiss. The layers of volcanic rocks and ash will react with the alkaline ground water, causing it to crystalize. This can also happen over millions of years in shallow areas of the sea.
Silica-rich volcanic rocks often follow this progression:
Clay → quartz → mordenite–heulandite → epistilbite → stilbite → thomsonite → mesolite → scolecite → chabazite → calcite
Silica-poor volcanic rocks often follow this progression:
Cowlesite → levyne → offretite → analcime → thomsonite → mesolite → scolecite → chabazite → calcite
