Sardonyx is a variety of quartz chalcedony that is a combination of both onyx and carnelian or sard. It forms within silica-rich waters, the chemical compounds seeping at a low temperature through the crevices of other rocks. Currently, sardonyx is often mined in Sri Lanka, however it can also be found in India, Uruguay, and Brazil.
 
Once believed to make it's wearer "as brave and daring as what it was carved into," Ancient Roman soldiers could be seen wearing sardonyx into battle along with the image of Mars, the God of War. Today, sardonyx is said to offer protection and courage to the wearer. It may assist with clear communication, as well as bringing happiness and stability to marriage and partnerships.
